Patta was founded in 2004 by Edson Sabajo and Guillaume "Gee" Schmidt, two friends who met through their shared love of Hip-Hop and sneaker culture. The name itself is a tribute to their heritage: "pata" means shoe in Surinamese, and that small detail says everything about the brand's roots. The very first store opened on the first floor of Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 142, right above Ben-G skate shop, stocked with hard-to-find sneakers the founders had sourced themselves. It quickly became something bigger than a shop: a hangout, a creative hub, and eventually one of the most respected independent streetwear labels in Europe. Today Patta calls the Zeedijk home, but that upstairs room is where it all started.
